Where will my massage or bodywork session take place? It can be at your home or in the massage room at a spa/treatment center
Must I be completely undressed? Depending on the type of massage, yes. You can keep your underwear on or off, I only uncover the body part that I am working on. If you would rather stay clothed, why not try a Shiatsu or Thai massage? You would only need to remove your shoes!
Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe? No, state law and massage therapy ethics require the therapist to not be present then.
Will I be covered during the session? Yes, depending on the type of massage. In Shiatsu or Thai massage, the client is fully clothed
What parts of my body will be massaged? Every part of the body (except the PRIVATE AREAS) can and should be massaged. However, a therapist will always work within the client's comfort and pain tolerance
Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork? Oh yes! Western and Eastern styles, reflexology, energy work
What should I do during the massage or bodywork session? Relax, breathe! Be aware that working on the body can bring up emotions, especially related to areas of pain.
How will I feel after the massage or bodywork session? That all depends on what is going on with your body and the type of work you received! Most people feel relaxed and have less pain; some can be sore for a day or two.
What are the benefits of massage and bodywork? Improved sleep, decreased pain and muscle stiffness, swifter recovery from injuries and less stress, to name a few!
Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable? Good question!! Sickness, an acute injury, active cellulitis. If you are pregnant, the therapist will require a doctors' note that it is safe for you to receive massage. If you have cancer, have had cancer, or are undergoing any medical treatment, it is advised to get a clearance from your doctor.
It is also important to tell the therapist about any medication, OTC medication or natural supplements you ate taking.
